Senior Curriculum

Preliminary Courses are studied during the first three terms of Year 11. Material covered in these courses is considered to be assumed knowledge at the Higher School Certificate (HSC) examination.
HSC Courses begins in Term 4 of Year 11 and leads to the HSC examination in Term 4 of Year 12. These courses are subject to official school-based assessment and the HSC examination concentrates on the topics covered in these courses.

Killarney Heights High School has extensively re-organized the structure of the senior school to take advantage of the opportunities for flexible progression to the HSC that have been offered by the Board of Studies under the pathways scheme.

Killarney Heights High School offers students in Years 11 and 12 the opportunity to:

  • Choose subjects from a wide range of courses
  • Study a traditional academic curriculum and matriculate to university
  • Study a vocationally oriented curriculum more suited to further studies at TAFE or tailored to suit future employment aspirations
  • Work part-time and study part-time
  • Accumulate the HSC over a period of up to five years
  • Attend TAFE Vocational Education and Training (TVET) courses.
  • Study small or individual candidature subjects through the resources of the Sydney Secondary Distance Education Centre
  • Study languages not currently available at the school through the Open High School - for example Spanish, Portuguese
  • Study community languages at Saturday School - for example - Korean Background speakers

The senior timetable structure gives each student the flexibility to design an individual program of study. The increased independence brings increased responsibility and senior students are expected to behave as mature young adults. Individual students may be required to arrive at and leave school at varying times, to study independently in the library and to travel to and from TAFE or work placement. If attendance and effort in lessons are not satisfactory, then students will be asked to show cause why they should be allowed to proceed in that subject.
